Plan two layers: a focused light that reaches the page without disturbing the other side of the bed, and a softer background glow for winding down.
Start with the finished bed
Wall-light positions should relate to the mattress, headboard, pillows, and the reader—not an empty room. Confirm the finished bed height and sit against the pillows before marking cable points.
Adjustable fittings are forgiving, but their arm, shade, and switch still need to be reachable without stretching.
Separate reading from ambience
A narrow reading beam gives useful contrast on the page and limits spill across the bed. A shaded table lamp, diffuse wall light, or concealed ledge can provide the softer background layer.
If one fitting must do both jobs, choose a design with independent ambient and reading sources rather than relying on one exposed lamp.
Keep control within reach
Each side should switch independently from bed. Consider where charging cables, books, glasses, and water will sit so the light does not consume the entire bedside surface.
A dimmer on the ambient layer is valuable, but the focused reading source usually benefits from a simple, predictable control.
Protect the quiet of the room
Very bright lamps and cool colour temperatures work against a restful atmosphere. Warm, low-output ambient sources are usually enough once the eye has adapted to the evening.
Control small sources of glare: visible bulbs, polished shades, and beams reflected in a wardrobe mirror can all feel brighter than their specification suggests.
