An IP number is only one part of exterior suitability. The fitting also needs the right material, coating, installation orientation, drainage, and maintenance for its exposure.
Read the rating in context
The IP code describes resistance to solid ingress and water under defined test conditions. It does not describe resistance to salt, UV exposure, cleaning chemicals, impact, or standing water.
Confirm that the rating applies in the intended mounting orientation and with the specified cable entry.
Match material to exposure
Powder-coated aluminium, stainless steel, brass, bronze, and polymers each behave differently. Grade, coating process, fixings, and finish system matter as much as the base material.
Near the coast or a pool, ask the supplier to confirm suitability in writing and follow the recommended cleaning interval.
Give water somewhere to go
Correct seals are essential, but so are drainage, cable loops, glands, and a stable mounting surface. Recessed ground fittings face different risks from protected wall lights under an eave.
Avoid locations where irrigation or surface runoff repeatedly directs water at a joint unless the product and installation are designed for it.
Plan for inspection and repair
Exterior seals, gaskets, coatings, and fixings age. Keep access to drivers and junctions, record product references, and inspect fittings periodically for water, corrosion, or damage.
Use a qualified installer and follow local rules for circuits, protection devices, and equipotential bonding where applicable.
