Choose colour temperature by atmosphere and material, then keep it consistent across fixtures that are seen together. The number matters less than the relationship.

Read Kelvin as appearance, not brightness

Colour temperature is measured in Kelvin. Lower values appear warmer and more amber; higher values appear cooler and whiter. It does not tell you how much light the lamp produces—that is described in lumens.

Two lamps with the same Kelvin rating can still look slightly different because of tint, optics, and the surfaces around them. Compare real samples when consistency is critical.

Where 2400K feels natural

Around 2400K suits living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, and hospitality-like spaces where an intimate, amber-toned atmosphere is the priority. It complements timber, warm stone, brass, and earthy textiles.

Very warm light can make clean whites appear creamier, so view it against the actual paint and finishes.

When 4000K earns its place

Around 4000K gives kitchens, bathrooms, work areas, circulation spaces, and contemporary interiors a clearer, neutral-white appearance. It often works well with limestone, concrete, nickel, and clean whites.

Avoid mixing 2400K decorative lights with 4000K task lights in the same view unless the contrast is deliberate.

Check colour rendering too

Colour rendering describes how faithfully colours appear under a light source. A good colour temperature paired with poor colour rendering can still flatten food, art, timber, and skin tones.

For important residential spaces, look for strong overall colour rendering and review manufacturer data rather than judging by Kelvin alone.
